For a debut single, Kai Kwasi’s ‘unt’ is an impressive piece of work. From the opening seconds of the track, he starts building a mellow soundscape centred on fuzzy guitar chords and permeated by saxophone licks, keyboard musings and later his gently lo-fi voice. There is a distinctive feel to Kwasi’s music, which partially comes from his warm compositional style, and partially from his DIY recording set-up: “I recorded ‘unt’ in my room on a broken audio interface with one of those podcaster mic stands. In short, the song is about not being sure if you’re doing things right.” Make sure you keep an eye out for more from this very exciting newcomer. -Dan Peeke
